The cross country team ran their first divisional race on Tuesday at Marysville Municipal Park. The rolling course afforded the runners some nice views of the St. Clair river and Canada on the other side, but the Trojans were more focused on their competitors.
Sarah Speilbusch, Sam Brown and Raquelle Robbins are the Trojan’s only returning runners, and they continue to see the rewards of their hard work. On girl’s were on average more than a minute and a half faster than their times on this course last year,
Freshman Claire Thomson took a conservative approach to the start of the race, sitting comfortably in 4th through the half-mile. Just before the mile mark she surged to take the lead, and then held on to it for the remaining 2.1 miles.
On a day when most runners ran about a minute slower than their season record, fellow freshman Abbey Lodato ran only 14 seconds off her PR to take 5th overall. Senior Raquelle Robbins had a great finish outkicking Lakeview’s Julia Martin to take 12th in the race. Despite their efforts the Trojans lost their dual meet to Lakeview 30-29.
The girls finished the race with a dual meet record of 10-3 with the losses coming to Marysville, Marine City and Lakeview.
On the boys side, traffic delays caused the team to have to run from the bus to the starting line in order to make the race. Despite the abbreviated warm-up the Trojans kept a great attitude and ran hard. Ryan Lodato led the Trojans followed by Michael Pizzo, Alex Treece, John Dickey, John Price, and Nico Nader.
They boys finished the race with a dual meet record of 3-11, with wins over Centerline, New Haven, and Warren Fitzgerald.
Both the middle school and high school teams will race this Saturday at the Holly Invitational.
